A high quality and well preserved item. It appears to be a display or bookcase. I suppose it could be a linen press or armoire but with the glass see-thru front door that doesn’t seem likely. If you buy it, you can call it what you wish. This item came from a descendant of one of the Grand Old Opera musicians. It was originally with a matching bedroom suite but the owner will not part with the remainder.
It is constructed from fine walnut and walnut veneers and adorned with heavy floral brass trim. The secondary wood structure and panels such as the back and supports, are made of select oak, some of it quarter sawn. The construction utilizes mortise and tenon joints. It measures approx 6’ 4” across X 95” high X 2 ‘ deep. It will fit in a room with an 8' ceiling. The center section is approx 3 ft across and has full-length glass in the arched door. The glass is of the wavy type. The side sections have full wood doors with full-length mirrors inside. All 3 compartments have several solid veneered shelves adjustable (in 1" increments) by the means of oak supports and z tracks. Each support is numbered and signed. The green felt on the shelves was a later addition. Each section has a bottom drawer with blind dovetail joints of the widely spaced hand cut type. Four Acorn finials with fluted columns accent the front. The unit breaks down for ease of transport and uses dowels and special threaded pins for assembly.
Several labels are on parts of this item. The name “Smith’s Wash D.C.” is on the labels. This could be the manufacturer or shipping ID labels.
